This past Friday night (Mar. 3) the Sheridan College women's basketball team took down rival Gillette College, 66-40, in the opening action of the Region IX Tournament. The victory advanced the Generals to the next round which will begin this Thursday, Mar 8, at Casper College.
In the win against Gillette, the Generals had four players score in double figures. Sophomore Raelynn Keefer (Forsyth, MT), who was selected to the All-Region IX team earlier in the week, led the charge with 13 points. Keefer was followed closely by freshman Lily Jex (Spanish Fork, UT) with 12 points, while Brooke Cargal (Gillette, WY) and Aloma Solovi (Salt Lake City, UT) chipped in 10 points apiece.
Jex led the team in assists with 4 but Keefer and fellow sophomore guard Sara Storeshaw (Mackay, AU) each racked up 3 assists while committing 0 turnovers. Ashleigh Frampton (Bundaberg, AU) was the leading rebounder in the contest with 15 boards. Her efforts included an impressive 6 offensive rebounds.
The Generals will now head to Casper College, along with the seven other teams who earned victories in the first-round, to compete in the final stages of the Region IX Tournament. Casper College earned the right to host the tournament by winning the North-Region IX regular season title. The tournament is single elimination, so teams must win to advance and continue their season.
On the first day of action Sheridan will face off against the Cougars of Western Nebraska at 3:00 PM. The Generals have already played the Cougars twice this season. In both games the Cougars came out on top. Other second-round match-ups include:
1:00 PM – Trinidad State vs Northwest College
3:00 PM - Sheridan College vs Western Nebraska
5:00 PM – Miles Community College vs Eastern Wyoming College
7:00 PM – Lamar Community College vs Casper College
