The Sheridan College women's basketball team starts the year with a 2-0 record after defeating both the Wyoming All-Stars and the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) over the weekend.
On Friday night the Generals defeated the Wyoming All-Stars 77-69. Sophomore guard, Noora Parttimaa (Loimaa, Finland) had a strong performance in the victory as she led all scorers with 23 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists. Sophomore forward, Kassie Hoyer (Belt, MT), recorded her first double-double of the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Also stepping up with double figures were incoming freshman Generals, center Lani Taliauli (Glendale, UT) and forward Misini Fifita (Salt Lake City, UT), who contributed 16 and 10 points respectively.
Then on Saturday night Sheridan pulled off an impressive upset against the No.14 Golden Eagles from the College of Southern Idaho 59-56. The Generals got out to an early lead against the Golden Eagles which they lost before half-time after a poor defensive performance in the second quarter. The two teams would continue to battle back and forth through-out the third quarter, but during the fourth quarter CSI started to pull away.
With 4:45 left to go in regulation the Golden Eagles earned a 9 point lead, their highest in the game. However, CSI would not score again, as the Generals would go on a 12-0 run to end the game. Sophomore guard, Aloma Solovi (Rose Park, UT), hit the final shot of the contest with 3.45 seconds left on the clock to give the Generals a 3 point lead. CSI called a time-out and advanced the ball but the Generals were able to get a tip on the in-bound pass and the ball rolled out of bounds as time expired.
It was a balanced effort for Sheridan with 11 Generals making scoring contributions and 10 recording at least 1 rebound. Solovi and Hoyer led the team with 9 points apiece. Freshman forward, Cynthia Green (Chula Vista, CA) led all rebounders with 11 boards, including 5 on the offensive end.
The Generals are on the road this weekend at Miles City and Glendive, Montana to play Miles Community College on Friday, Nov. 9th at 5:00 PM and Dawson Community College on Saturday, Nov. 10th at 2:00 PM.
